I am very pleased to invite you to my quilt show at Bay Quilts.

Bay Quits in El Cerrito has a lovely gallery space and I get 60 feet of walls to fill with my work. It’s a great venue, as you can get up close to the quilts and wall hangings and explore all of the tiny appliqués included in my curious collages.

I am excited to premiere my newest piece – the Giant Selfie – It includes a large photographic self-portrait and marks a culminating point in my exploration of this genre of quilting. I combine all of my favorite elements of the style including a strong central image, flowers, and using unusual textiles. It also has a billion (ok, maybe only 250) small appliqués of things that I like or I don’t like or that influence my life in some way.

I will also have some large and small pieces for sale in the store during the month, as well as more on the website.

New Class at Bay Quilts – Exuberant Appliqué – Portraits.

In conjunction with the quilt show, I am offering a companion class at Bay Quilts titled Exuberant Appliqué – Portraits. This is your chance to spend time with me and create your own portrait-style raw-edge collage piece. The portrait style is the perfect class to show off a person, place or thing which you have been REALLY WANTING to make a quilt out of and you just didn’t know what to do with it. Try a photo transferred on to the fabric of yourself or a loved one or pet. Get out that Frida Kahlo, Wonder Woman, or Incredible Hulk panel. Pick out your favorite Cori Dantini or J. Wecker Fresch design. This is a delightful way to create a unique portrait.
I will share how-to ideas, design styles & tricks, as well as my raw-edge finishing style with the batting showing and no binding!

Join me to make your own personal, creative piece.

Class meets twice: Sunday, June 16 and Sunday, June 23 from 12:00 to 4:00
Class signups and supply lists are available at:

I just found your website through The Quilt Show blog and am in heaven. LOVE your truly “exuberant” applique. Am going to sign up right away for your online course since I am on the other side of the country. So glad they shared your work. Best wishes.

      Yay! You’ve found me!
I created the class so I can teach what I’m doing, as I am trying to convert the everyone to my style, and I can do it from my studio!!!
I’m so pleased they shared my work, too. Alex says she’s a BIG FAN – Woot!
I’m available to answer questions you might have, and I’ll be making more films with other elements of my work.
Stay in touch and please share what you’re making!

  2. Hi Alethea!
I have been over the moon about your appearance on the Quilt Show! I do fabric collage too! I just loved your show I could relate to you in so many ways! If I could figure out the Skype technology maybe we could Skype? You do some things that I never thought of. Anyway , consider me a fan. 🙂

    1. Hi Marie,
Thank you for getting in touch. I am so pleased that you liked the Quilt Show! So glad to have you join my merry band of (misfit) quilters!
The Skype lesson could work well if you have a computer or laptop and you can point the camera towards a work surface wall or on a table where you collage is. Then we can discuss composition and other ideas.
Another place to start might be my online course, Exuberant Applique basics, which you can find on my website and watch in your own time. Here’s a link to the overview video. https://aletheaballard.com/module-1/course-overview-and-meet-alethea/
Any time you’re interested in trying the Skype, we can set up a good time. Best! Alethea
